Work out the aspect ratio of a width and height.
Aspect ratio
16:9
- As a decimal
- 1.7778
v1.0 · Reviewed September 2026
How this is worked out
The width and height are divided by their greatest common divisor to give the simplest whole-number ratio, with the decimal ratio alongside.
Worked example
- 1920 × 1080
both divided by 120
16:9, or 1.7778
Assumptions and limits
- Dimensions are rounded to whole numbers before simplifying.
- Awkward pixel counts can produce an unhelpful exact ratio such as 683:384, which is correct but not a recognised standard.
- Assumes square pixels, which is true of essentially all modern displays.
