How this is worked out
Total mileage is distance × number of journeys, doubled when return journeys are selected. If you enter a pence per mile rate, the value is the total mileage × that rate.
Worked example
- 24 miles each way
- 20 journeys
- 45p a mile
- Return journeys
24 × 20 × 2 = 960 miles, × 45p
960 miles worth £432.00
Assumptions and limits
- Uses whatever rate you enter. HMRC's approved mileage allowance payment for cars is 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year and 25p after that, so a long year needs the two blocks worked out separately.
- The return option simply doubles the distance, so enter a round-trip distance with the return option off if your journeys differ each way.
- Commuting between home and a permanent workplace is not usually claimable business mileage.
