How this is worked out

For a right angled triangle, a² + b² = c². Leave the hypotenuse at zero to find it from the two short sides, or enter it with one short side to find the other.

Worked example

  • Side A 3
  • Side B 4
  • Hypotenuse left at 0

√(3² + 4²)

Hypotenuse 5, area 6

Assumptions and limits

  • Only valid for right angled triangles.
  • The hypotenuse must be longer than either other side, otherwise the triangle is impossible and no result is shown.
  • Units are whatever you use, as long as both sides use the same one.
