v1.0 · Reviewed September 2026
How this is worked out
Profit is (sale price − purchase price) × the number of shares, and the percentage return compares the two prices.
Worked example
- Bought at £2.00
- Sold at £2.50
(2.50 − 2.00) × 1,000
£500.00 profit, a 25% return
Assumptions and limits
- Excludes dealing charges, stamp duty reserve tax of 0.5% on most UK share purchases, and any currency costs.
- Excludes dividends received, so total return on a held share is usually higher.
- Capital gains tax may be due on gains above the annual exempt amount outside an ISA or pension.
