VO2 Max Calculator
Estimate VO2 max from a one-mile walk time and heart rate.
Estimated VO2 max
42ml/kg/min
Rockport one-mile walk estimate for adults aged 20–69. The original Kline study sample was aged 30–69; results vary with testing conditions.

How this is worked out
Uses the Rockport one-mile walk equation: 132.853 − 0.0769 × weight in pounds − 0.3877 × age + 6.315 if male − 3.2649 × walk time in minutes − 0.1565 × finishing heart rate.
Worked example
- 75 kg
- Age 35
- 15 minute mile
- 140 bpm at the finish
- Male
42 ml/kg/min
Assumptions and limits
- Valid for a brisk one-mile walk, not a run, on level ground, with the heart rate taken immediately at the finish.
- Restricted to ages 20 to 69. The original Kline study sample was aged 30 to 69, so the youngest ages are an extrapolation.
- The sex term is part of the published equation and adds 6.315 for male. It reflects the study population rather than any individual.
- Slow walk times combined with a high heart rate can drive the equation to a negative figure, which is not physically meaningful. The calculator shows no result in that case rather than an impossible number.
- An estimate, not a laboratory measurement.
