How this is worked out
Carpet area is room length × width, plus any waste allowance you enter.
Worked example
- Room 4 m × 3.5 m
- No waste allowance
4 × 3.5 = 14 m²
14 m²
Assumptions and limits
- Carpet is cut from rolls of a fixed width, usually 4 m or 5 m, so the piece you actually buy is often larger than the room area.
- Doorways, bays and pattern matching add waste, and underlay and gripper are separate.
