How this is worked out

Energy into the battery is capacity × the percentage added. That is divided by 0.9 to allow for 10% charging losses, then multiplied by the price per kWh.

Worked example

  • 60 kWh battery
  • 80% added
  • 24.5p per kWh

48 kWh into the battery, 53.3 kWh drawn, × 24.5p

£13.07

Assumptions and limits

  • Assumes 10% charging losses. Home AC charging is often a little better, and cold-weather or rapid DC charging noticeably worse.
  • Uses one flat price per kWh, so an overnight EV tariff needs its off-peak rate entered rather than the day rate.
  • Uses the battery figure you enter. Usable capacity is normally a few kWh below the headline size.
