Volume is area × compacted depth, converted to tonnes at 2.0 tonnes per cubic metre for compacted MOT Type 1.
Worked example
- Area 30 m²
- Compacted depth 150 mm
30 × 0.15 = 4.5 m³, and 4.5 × 2 = 9 tonnes
4.5 m³, weighing about 9 tonnes
Assumptions and limits
- Type 1 loses roughly a quarter of its loose depth when compacted, so lay in layers and allow extra loose material.
- Typical depths are around 100 mm for footpaths and 150 mm or more for drives, but that depends on the ground and the loading.
