Gravel Calculator
Work out how much gravel you need for a drive, path or border.
Gravel required
1.6tonnes
- Volume
- 1 m³
Assumes loose gravel at about 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre.
v1.0 · Reviewed September 2026
How this is worked out
Volume is area × depth, converted to tonnes at 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre for loose gravel.
Worked example
- Area 20 m²
- Depth 50 mm
20 × 0.05 = 1 m³, and 1 × 1.6 = 1.6
1.6 tonnes, from 1 m³
Assumptions and limits
- Density varies with stone size and how wet it is, so the tonnage is approximate.
- About 50 mm suits paths and borders. Drives are usually laid deeper and over a sub-base.
