Tarmac Calculator
Work out how many tonnes of tarmac you need for a drive or path.
Tarmac required
3.54tonnes
- Volume
- 1.5 m³
Assumes a compacted density of 2.36 tonnes per cubic metre, typical for asphalt.
v1.0 · Reviewed September 2026
How this is worked out
Volume is area × laid depth, converted to tonnes at 2.36 tonnes per cubic metre for compacted asphalt.
Worked example
- Area 30 m²
- Laid depth 50 mm
30 × 0.05 = 1.5 m³, and 1.5 × 2.36 = 3.54
3.54 tonnes
Assumptions and limits
- The depth entered is the finished compacted depth, not the loose laid depth.
- Density varies with the mix and aggregate size, so treat the tonnage as an ordering guide.
- The sub-base is separate and is not included.
