How this is worked out
Volume is area × depth. The weight applies 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre, typical for screened topsoil.
Worked example
- Area 20 m²
- Depth 100 mm
20 × 0.1 = 2 m³, and 2 × 1.5 = 3 tonnes
2 m³, weighing about 3 tonnes
Assumptions and limits
- Wet soil is heavier, and loose soil settles, so allow a little extra depth.
- Bulk bags vary in what they actually hold, so compare the supplier's volume rather than the bag name.
