v1.0 · Reviewed September 2026
How this is worked out
The overtime hourly rate is your normal rate × the multiplier. Overtime pay is that rate × the overtime hours.
Worked example
- Normal rate £15.00
- Overtime hours 8
- Multiplier 1.5
15 × 1.5 = £22.50 an hour, and 22.50 × 8 = 180
£180.00
Assumptions and limits
- Gross pay before tax, National Insurance and pension deductions.
- There is no automatic legal right to an enhanced overtime rate in the UK, so the multiplier comes from your contract. Pay must still average at least the minimum wage across the pay period.
