How this is worked out
Both times are converted to minutes past midnight and the start is subtracted from the end. If the result is negative the shift is treated as running past midnight and 24 hours is added.
Worked example
- Start 09:00
- End 17:30
1050 − 540 = 510 minutes
8h 30m, or 8.5 decimal hours
Assumptions and limits
- Breaks are not deducted, so subtract unpaid break time yourself.
- An end time earlier than the start is treated as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 gives 8 hours.
- Identical start and end times give zero, not 24 hours.
