How this is worked out

Litres are area × number of coats ÷ the coverage per litre printed on the tin.

Worked example

  • Area 40 m²
  • Coverage 12 m² per litre
  • 2 coats

40 × 2 ÷ 12 = 6.67

6.67 litres

Assumptions and limits

  • Coverage is taken from the tin, and the default of 12 m² per litre is only a typical emulsion figure.
  • Bare plaster, dark colours being covered and textured surfaces all absorb more.
  • Paint is sold in fixed tin sizes, so round up when buying.
