How this is worked out
Volume is area × depth, converted to tonnes at 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre for dry to moderately damp sand.
Worked example
- Area 20 m²
- Depth 50 mm
20 × 0.05 = 1 m³, and 1 × 1.6 = 1.6 tonnes
1 m³, weighing about 1.6 tonnes
Assumptions and limits
- Wet sand is heavier and bulks in volume, so both figures shift after rain.
- Screeding sand under paving compacts, so allow a little extra depth.
