How this is worked out
Adding VAT multiplies your amount by the rate. Removing VAT divides by 1 plus the rate, because the VAT is already inside the price.
Worked example
- Amount £100
- VAT rate 20%
100 × 1.2 to add, and 100 ÷ 1.2 to remove
£120.00 with VAT added, or £83.33 net if the £100 already included VAT
Assumptions and limits
- Both directions are shown at once, so read the line that matches your situation. Taking 20% off a VAT-inclusive price is a common error and gives too little.
- Uses the rate you enter and does not decide whether a supply is standard rated, reduced rated, zero rated or exempt.
