How this is worked out

The surface area is divided by the area of one tile, multiplied by any waste allowance, then rounded up to whole tiles.

Worked example

  • Surface 3 m × 2.4 m
  • Tile 300 × 600 mm
  • No waste allowance

7.2 m² ÷ 0.18 m² = 40

40 tiles

Assumptions and limits

  • Grout joints are not deducted, so the count is very slightly generous on large areas.
  • Cuts around edges, corners and fittings mean most jobs need a waste allowance, commonly 10 per cent and more for diagonal or patterned layouts.
